The Business

Do you know anyone that started a business, but they really didn’t mean to? Well if not, you do now.  That would be us.  My husband and I own a bath and body care business, Hummingbird Farms, Ltd.  But – it's an accidental company. We didn't sit down and plan it all out. We didn’t put together a business plan and meet with investors or bet the farm on a new start up.  Our business evolved.  It truly is a business of love.  I know that sounds cliché…  But, it is true.

Our first year on the farm we planted several acres of lavender.  We really had no grand plan except to perhaps participate in some farmer's markets and maybe even open the farm for "pick your own" tours.  That same year, which began with such exhilaration of beautiful fields of lavender, ended with the air being knocked out of our sails when I was diagnosed with invasive breast cancer.

Early in my treatment I began having severe skin irritability, and it was then that I immersed myself into a self-education of common cosmetic ingredients.  Always being a "products" girl, I wanted to understand more about what I had been slathering all over my body for 38 years. More importantly, I wanted to understand why I couldn't get relief for my own inflamed skin, even with prescription creams. Through my research I became quite concerned and started being more cautious of not only what I was putting in my body, but on my body as well.

So it all evolved from there.  And an evolution it was.  Those lavender flowers provided us with so much inspiration for our first line of body care, and as they say - the rest is history.  Here we are today with clean and natural body care products that are elegantly packaged and feel like luxury.  I truly believe I have a responsibility:  If you are seeking out clean products we have something for you, or - if you are seeking out pretty packaging, we have something to offer you, too, but with a bonus:  good, quality ingredients that are creamy and luscious and good for you.  It is  my way of giving back as a breast cancer survivor.  And being farmers, we wanted to focus on American agriculture by selecting plant-based ingredients as much as possible, not synthetic, laboratory created ingredients.  Our commitment is to develop aloe-based body care products that properly balance your skin, that are scented naturally with essential oils, no synthetic fragrance or perfumes, no dyes, no added water, and no harsh preservatives.

One product at a time and one customer at a time, this wonderful business simply evolved.

    Like a Porch….

I want to lay up like that, to float unstructured, without ambition or anxiety.  I want to inhabit my life like a porch.   - Rebecca Wells, Divine Secrets of the Ya-Ya Sisterhood

    A photographic journey

We’ve been busy little bees, or hummingbirds, here at Hummingbird Farms the last few weeks.  First off – after 7 years, we decided it was time to update photography for our alleged new website.  I say “alleged” [...]

What I have learned from old dogs and old ladies

I saw a posting on Facebook today from a friend who mentioned a shelter that was full of old dogs that had been “turned over” by their owners.  I'm not sure of all the various reasons why these old dogs are turned over, but I [...]

Some synthetics might look like a duck and quack like a duck, but…..

The talk of the use of antibacterial soap was big news last week.  Well – it was until something about a duck and a dynasty trumped all other news.           So in case you missed it, HERE is what you [...]

    What would the pilgrims do?

So I thought I would actually do a post about Thanksgiving.  Heck – why not? It is Thanksgiving Eve after all.  Of course some may think Thanksgiving is now old news, being that we somehow have skipped this holiday and jumped [...]
